Repertoire
Many
musical groups of distinction can claim a repertoire that is
both broad and deep, rich in texture, variety and nuance.
By
contrast, our repertoire is narrow and shallow. Although some
of its members individually may know hundreds of tunes and songs
(more for Mary DuShane), as a group our set lists can be printed
on small Post-It™ notes.
In fact,
when we first performed, we knew just three songs, because we
only had to play about 15 minutes tops. However, in the
jug band world, three songs may be adequate to constitute a full
length concert. "How?" you might ask. Easy. These old songs
have hundreds of verses and versions, so we just play them over
and over with slight variations, and the audience is never the
wiser.
We are
learning more tunes as a band, but as a
presidential candidate once said,
"It's hard. It's hard work. You have to work
really hard. Have to work on weekends. It's
HARD."
Saves on
practice time to go slow, too. The Geezers are old, so they don't have
time to learn new stuff.
