Historical Tree Information

Tree # 1:  Early 2003

The first tree consists of two wonderful shows.  The first is a great solo show from Portland, Oregon that took place on February 2, 1974 at the Civic Auditorium when Steve opened for John Prine.  It was taken from a first generation reel to reel tape as broadcast over KINK-FM and is of excellent quality.

The Portland set list is as follows:

1) Lady Be Good
2) Turnpike Tom
3) City of New Orleans
4) Paul Powell
5) Ballad of Penny Evans
6) I Ain't Heard You Play No Blues
7) Chicken Cordon Bleus
8) Lincoln Park Pirates
9) The Auctioneer
10) You Never Even Call Me by My Name
11) The Dutchman

The second show is an upgraded version of the wonderful October 10, 1977 Bottom Line show as broadcast over WNEW-FM.  Steve is joined by Jethro Burns, Saul Broudy and Steve Burgh on this set.  This version eliminates some of the warble, tape drag and speed problems from the version currently circulating.  It, too, comes from a first generation reel to reel but does exhibit some tape hiss that I have chosen NOT to remove for two reasons: 1) I'm not adept at it, and 2) I wanted to avoid the artifacts that are typically introduced from this sort of alteration.

The Bottom Line set list is as follows:

1) Red Red Robin
2) Video Tape
3) Flotilla (If You Want it Done Right, You've Got to Do it Yourself)
4) Old Smoothies
5) The 20th Century is Almost Over
6) You're the Girl I Love
7) Men Who Love Women Who Love Men
8) Two Lovers
9) Can't Go Back
10) My Old Man
11) Is It True What They Say About Dixie?
12) Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyeballs
13) Spoon River
14) Jesse Jig (Rob's Romp, Beth's Bounce)
15) City of New Orleans
16) Old Fashioned

Notes: These historic recordings were recorded using a handheld microphone in the early 1970's onto cassette tape and, as such, contain both microphone and tape noise.  However, the performances are reasonably clear and intelligible.  The only adjustments made to the original tapes were to re-balance the equalization to recreate a more natural sound but, still, this is a set for collectors. Enjoy!

Tree # 4:  November 2004

This tree consists of two discs.  The first CD consists of an appearance Steve made with a full backing band at Bogart’s in Cincinnati on April 18, 1979.  This is not only the most complete version of the show in circulation, it also has significantly improved sound.  Even if you have another version of this show, you’ll want to replace it with this upgrade.

The second CD is comprised of 3 different appearances Steve made at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in Schwenksville, PA between 1971 and 1976.  Not all performances are complete, but this has been taken from the best available sources and is as complete as we could locate.  (If you have other, more complete performances from these folk festivals, please let us know!)  Sound quality varies from very good to near excellent and this is another CD you’ll want to have in your collection.
